This took me sometime to find out, and finally found this at a forum.
Go to All Programs — Go to Accessories — Go to Ease of Access — Go to Ease of Access Center — Click the blue link titled Make computer easier to see — UNCHECK turn on Magnifier — Click Apply and then exit… Restart computer and make sure that magnifier does not start upon startup.

thank yo so much. since i bought my laptop i’ve been trying to figure out how to remove the magnifier. this advice worked. thank yo so much!
I’m good with computers….not the lingo but working with them. I did so many things, including what you suggested. Windows magnifier keeps coming back on startup. I don’t want to delete it altogether because you never know when you might need it, but I’m beginning to hate that thing. The best I was able to do is have it appear as a small box on the left bottom of my screen, so it doesn’t annoy me so much. If it does, I close it.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:
Windows defender (to close it out…..magnifier isn’t listed and didn’t want to take a chance I might be shutting down something wrong.
Startup Menu (run/msconfig) (not listed)
Going in as an administrator and changing the settings
Going through the control panel looking for that box to uncheck that you suggested that doesn’t exist the way you mentioned on my computer.
And a few other things, I can’t even remember now after hours of trying.

I’m back: Another way to disable Windows Magnifier
Go to Help and Support (Start to Help and Support) and type in Optimize Visual Display. When instructions come up, click on the Ease of Access link there, a box appears that did not appear for me in the control panel or as explained above, and at the very bottom uncheck magnifier box. Restart! It’s gone.
Hello Angie here are some more pointers to disable programs on startup.
a) When I changed these settings my start menu was altered to classic mode hence the navigation is a bit different, I believe your system is still on factory setup, so here is how to get to the Magnifier screen.
1) Click on Start , click on All Programs
2) click on Accessories
3) Click on Ease of Access
4) Click on Ease of access Center
(your start menu should look like the attached image) above
5) In the Ease of Access Center, click on Make the Computer easier to use
6) You should see the Screen as displayed above, uncheck the checkbox that says Turn on Magnifier.
b) As you said you went into start menu but could not find run/msconfig , if you have not changed your default start menu then when you click on Windows Vista start button you should see a search button that says “Start Search” in dim font, click in in the search area and type msconfig , Vista should prompt you for access rights, after accepting to enter the admin mode you should see an application that has multiple tabs at the top , click on the Startup tab, and you should see all the applications that are started on windows startup, disable the ones you do not want started from here. This will ask you to restart computer to apply new changes.
Hello Angie, I guess you posted your Answer at more or less the same time I was typing my response, thanks a lot for providing an alternate way of getting to the Ease of Access Center.
thanks for this, it was really driving me nuts I just couldnt figure out where to turn it off my next step was to just delete the program.

I don’t even know how the magnifier turned on. I touched my mouse and the screen didn’t appear so I hit my space bar, and the magnifier turned on. weird. I had this same problem about a year and a half ago with Narrator and I finally had to turn on everything on the Ease of Use display and then turn everything off and then restart. That debacle took 2 weeks to find an answer and I came up with it myself. None of the online fixes worked and even our IT folks couldn’t turn the dang thing off …. Vista isn’t user friendly, even under Ease of Use …

I am glad this post was of help to so many people. and from the opinions I get on windows posts, it does seem that Microsoft still has got a long way to go to make their operating system usable.
Ok I have done the turn off as instructed powered machine off rebooted and wow the magnifier is back on. Any suggestions
I am trying to help a friend try and disable her magnifier…I`m at one end of the country and she is one the other so i can`t see her screen I don`t have vista get I have an XP so I`m doing this blind in more ways than one….I found this fourm and told her what I had found here on how to disable her magnifier…she emailed me back saying that she thinks she deleted her eazy access thinking she was deleting the magnifier because the easy access is gone…this person is 71 years old and brand new to computers…My questions is this there a way of getting the eazy access back…? Will a system restore do the trick…? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
